IP Addresses Explained

Every computer, mobile phone, web server and so forth, connected to the Internet will be assigned a unique identifying number. This number is called an IP address, you can compare this to a license plate on a car. To make this IP address easy to remember we use domains. A domain simply points to a certain IP address. The web server, which the IP address is assigned to, will send the visitor to the appropriate website.

We make difference in two types of IP addresses.

Shared IP Address

A shared IP address means you will share the same IP address with more users / websites. Due to the rapid increase of registered domains and the finite number of IP addresses this type of IP is most common in the web hosting industry.

Dedicated IP Address

A dedicated IP is also called a static IP and means that your account will have its own IP address. A domain added to your account will use this IP. You will not share the IP with anybody else.

Do you need a dedicated IP?

Expert opinions differ on whether you should use a dedicated or shared IP address. In our opinion having a website on a shared IP address will not cause you any harm, unless you need any special requirements like a Private SSL Certificate. Order a dedicated IP

A dedicated IP is only available to our Business Hosting customers for € 15 per year. During the registration process you can order a dedicated IP address as an add-on to your hosting package. If you are already subscribed you can log in the support site and place an order.
